Say the market falls 40% - What should we do?
Posted by: DreamFire - 09-01-2018, 08:49 PM - Forum: Funds - Replies (29)

I am not saying I think the market is going to fall substantially... although anything is possible.

Say, I have a balanced $1M portfolio of investments, 50% equities and 50% fixed income (i.e., $500k of each mainly in mutual funds/ETFs).  I am not necessarily wedded to 50/50 but something like that I think is about right considering where I am in life and how I view the current market.  I have both taxable and IRA-type accounts.

Tomorrow, I wake up and the equities are now worth $300k and the fixed income assets are still $500k.  What would you do if this happened to you?

Actually, I have a pretty good idea what I would do.  But before giving my opinion, I am interested in hearing what others think they might do. If what you would do would depend on further assumptions/events/scenarios, please elaborate.

I appreciate any and all opinions!

  Individual vs Bond funds?

Is it time to sell high yield bond funds and invest in individual bonds?

For those in cash, when do you plan on investing?
Posted by: FIREin2018 - 09-01-2018, 08:34 PM - Forum: Stocks - Replies (15)

Over the last month I tried riding the bounce and through Dollar Cost Averaging made 1%. I am up 3% for the year.

Now I am all in cash and wondering when to get back in.

Not having a 25bps raise worries me since the market doesn't like uncertainty.

I am looking for Dow around its recent low of 15,666 as an entry point. Perhaps in the 15,700 to 15,800 range.

Anyone have any other thoughts on when to commit again?

  Amazon Short Term Call Options
Posted by: FiguringItOut - 08-28-2018, 10:18 AM - Forum: Options - No Replies

Well that's a great question regarding amazon I will continue holding my shares of amazon and have been  lucky /smart/ fortunate in playing  short term call options anytime it drops like 20 or 30 points and will continue to do so
Right now I believe amazon is 1578.....and I am glad you got in
My prediction is that it will hit and bounce off 1600  a couple of times before making it through as it really doesn't care about interest rates north Korean missiles Florida flood insurance lol   etc etc ....lol

What really has worked great in the aggressive dividends play on LADR which actually went up  on its ex day when it should have at least gone down 2% but it didn't  and we picked almost a point on a 15.23 stock  since the group bought it plus it pays over 8%

I dont take credit for this one ( i never heard of it before )  as one of the most credible  members of the dividends group kept Yelling  and Yelling lol at us to make a play on it and we did and worked out fantastic ..
So hats off to Susan !!!
so again i thank a poster for their insight on this one just like the poster who turned me on BA
Right now We are in the middle of the CIM play with its ex day on 3/28 i believe

What is your biggest concern for retirement?
Posted by: FiguringItOut - 08-28-2018, 09:39 AM - Forum: Retirement - Replies (32)

The process of planning for an "ideal" retirement can be a challenging task, especially if that planning didn't start as early as you would have liked. Information like what's found in this retirement calculator Viewpoints article can certainly get you thinking. Even those who started saving at an early age can easily get derailed by unexpected volatility in the market.

Wink How does your Home factor in your Real Estate investment?
Posted by: exflyboy - 08-28-2018, 09:33 AM - Forum: Savings - Replies (10)

Do you consider it a piece of RE?
I'm light on Real Estate according to the Portfolio Analysis.
I don't want to invest in REITS at this time.
When I factor in my residence, I have a sizeable RE investment that I live in.
According to my reading of this forum, there is no good way to invest in Real Estate other than ownership.
I don't want additional properties but see the appreciation around and would like to participate.
Then there's the RE taxes and fallout from Tax Reform.
OTOH, it's a lot of $$$ if the house is sold with a one time Cap Gains exemption.
Pigs get slaughtered.

  Fidelity's Multi-Asset fund - buy or skip?
Posted by: secondcor521 - 08-28-2018, 09:20 AM - Forum: Asset Allocation - Replies (2)

I have been watching this Fidelity fund when it was launched in the Adviser class of products a couple years ago. Now Fidelity opened it to regular customers. It is a balanced fund with one-stop shop for investing in stocks and bonds. The “multi-asset” descriptor is very misleading, as the fund invests in just two asset types: Stocks and Bonds. As of April 30, it allocated 40.3% to stocks and 57.9% to bonds, and the remainder in cash. The net expense ratio is a bit high at 0.86%.

I'm thinking, how is this different than Target Date funds Fidelity already sells? Could you throw in the towel, convert you portfolio to FMSDX and live happily ever after? What are your thoughts or comments?

Defensive portfolio allocation for possible troubles ahead?
Posted by: jaisonpandey - 08-28-2018, 09:17 AM - Forum: Asset Allocation - Replies (3)

I don't expect a market crash any time soon, but several luminaries including former OMB director David Stockman and former fed chair Alan Greenspan seem to think it's a realistic possibility with bonds and perhaps stocks as well in a bubble. If you take them seriously but also don't want to be hiding under your bed clutching gold coins, where would you strike a balance in allocation that you could live with if you take the possibility of a global debt crash seriously?

New to the forum & investing. What are the experienced investors doing?

I am relatively new to investing

  Amazon.....Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Posted by: sibley - 08-28-2018, 09:10 AM - Forum: Stocks - Replies (9)

Is Amazon a buy, sell, or hold!!! My personal view is that Amazon is way overvalued. It reminds me of sky high valuations many stocks were sporting in early 2000....We all know what happened after that. Disclosure....I do not now or in the past have owned Amazon stock, other than maybe a mutual fund or funds I own may hold a position in it.

Just some of the metrics I find to be sky high:
PE ttm 179.3
PEG ratio (5 years) 6.5
Price to Book 24.12
Total Debt/Equity mrq 99.65
Price/Cash Flow ttm 40.15

Things I find to be too low:
Net profit as % of Revenue ttm 1.81%
Dividend 0%

I tend to be more of a value investor, so I may be missing something in this growth story. I know that plenty of people that may have invested in AMZN in past has most likely made some good money. But, going forward, what is your opinion, buy, sell, or hold and why?
